So what does contraception at a Catholic hospital or college have to do with a $109 billion highway bill?

Nothing, it would seem.  

But US senators can propose amendments on any subject. And the Obama administration’s proposed rule requiring church-affiliated organizations to provide health insurance that covers contraception has turned toxic.

It has thrown the White House back on defense after a rare spike of good economic news. It’s also dividing Democratic ranks at a time when both the White House and top Democratic leaders are urging a display of unity.

And that brings us back to the highway bill.

Senate Republicans wanted to get a vote on the matter as soon as possible. The amendment, proposed by Rep. Roy Blunt (R) of Missouri, would allow employers the right to provide employees with health coverage “consistent with their religious beliefs and moral convictions,” without risk of federal penalties.

“This bill would just simply say that those health-care providers don’t have to follow that mandate if it violates their faith principles,” said Senator Blunt in a floor speech on Thursday.

The measure, cosponsored by Sen. Ben Nelson (D) of Nebraska, prompted an objection by Senate majority leader Harry Reid, which blocked a floor vote.

“Republicans never lose an opportunity to mess up a good piece of legislation,” he said.

“They’re talking about a First Amendment right and I appreciate that,… but there’s no final rule," he said, suggesting that the rule is not yet set in stone. "Why don’t we just calm down and see what the final rule is.”

The US Conference of Catholic Bishops is not waiting. The USCCB, which initially opposed the health-care reform bill in 2010 in the fear that abortions could be federally funded, has called on Catholics across the nation to write to their elected representatives to protest the proposed rule.

“Never before has the federal government forced individuals and organizations to go out into the marketplace and buy a product that violates their conscience,” said USCCB President and Cardinal-designate Timothy Dolan.

On Wednesday, Speaker John Boehner (R) of Ohio pledged to overturn the rule.

While some Roman Catholic Democrats, such as Sens. Bob Casey of Pennsylvania, Joe Manchin of West Virginia, John Kerry of Massachusetts, and Claire McCaskill of Missouri, have called on the White House to back off the proposed rule, others – also Roman Catholics – are rallying around the president.

“I am dumbfounded that in the year 2012 we still have to fight over birth control,” said Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D) of New York, in a statement on Thursday.

“It is sad that we have to stand here yet again to fight back against another overreach and intrusion into women’s lives. This is what it is – a political overreach to roll back access to birth control – not a religious issue,” she added.

It wasn't the pitchers duel everyone expected.

Quite the opposite, actually. After Texas scored in each of the game's first two frames, the Giants stormed back with six runs in the fifth inning to break it open, and added three more in the eighth before eventually winning, 11-7. The two teams' run total of 18 is the highest this postseason, eclipsing the 13 scored by the Rangers and Yankees in Game 4 of the ALCS.

Even after the six-run frame, the Rangers weren't ready to call it a night. Texas put up two runs in the sixth inning on two-out hits from Mitch Moreland, who lined one off Tim Lincecum's leg for a single, and David Murphy to make the score 8-4. After Murphy's hit, Lincecum yielded to Santiago Casilla, who ended the threat with a strikeout of Elvis Andrus.

The Giants weren't finished either. San Francisco tacked on three final insurance runs in the eighth inning. An RBI double to left off the bat of Travis Ishikawa got things started before the Giants got RBI singles from Sanchez and Nate Schierholz. Sanchez's RBI was his third of the contest.

San Francisco's monster fifth inning got really moving with back-to-back two-out hits from Cody Ross and Aubrey Huff, which chased Lee from the game. Juan Uribe then promptly greeted reliever Darren O'Day with a three-run blast to left.

Sanchez kicked off the scoring in the fifth inning with his third double of the game. With that two-bagger, Sanchez became the first player in World Series history to double in his first three at-bats in the Fall Classic.

It was on Sanchez's second double of the game in the third that helped his team get on the board initially. Sanchez's RBI in the third helped the Giants to capitalize on a Michael Young error at third base and a rare hit batsman from Lee.

Buster Posey followed Sanchez with another line-drive single to center to tie the game temporarily at 2.

This all turned around what appeared to be a rocky start by the Giants and Lincecum. The Freak committed a mental mistake in the first inning that set him up for a potential disaster, but he narrowly avoided big trouble.

With one out and men on the corners, the Rangers' Nelson Cruz hit a soft grounder down the third-base line, where Lincecum fielded it and trapped Young between third base and home. But instead of forcing Young into a rundown, Lincecum simply chased Young back to third base, which was unoccupied.

That gave the Rangers bases loaded with one out instead of two men on and two outs. But the next batter, Ian Kinsler, grounded into a double play on the first pitch to spare San Francisco from a big inning.

Lee helped his team increase its lead in the second frame, doubling to the left-field gap. On the ensuing play, Bengie Molina scored on an Andrus sacrifice fly to put the Rangers up, 2-0, until the Giants came back to tie it and eventually take the lead.

Adidas cancels $10M iAd contract due to Apple's control - rumor

Shoemaker Adidas has reportedly canceled a $10 million deal for mobile advertisements on Apple's iAd service, because the iPhone maker has allegedly exerted too much control over the process.

Citing two mobile industry executives, Silicon Alley Insider has claimed that Adidas pulled its campaign because "Apple CEO Steve Jobs was being too much of a control freak." Adidas is rumored to have a creative concept rejected three times, prompting the move.

"In addition to Apple's unusual control over the ad creation process, advertisers complain about the lack of control over visibility into where their ads appear, lack of third-party ad serving tools, and other issues," the report said. "Apple plans to open up the process once its' more comfortable with the program, but it appears some advertisers have lost their patience."

The report largely reaffirms what The Wall Street Journal claimed in August, when the paper said that advertisers have been frustrated over Apple's "tight control over the creative process" for iAds. It was said that Apple's mobile advertisements take between eight and 10 weeks from start to finish, and Apple, which builds the ads itself, was taking two weeks longer than advertisers expected.

It was noted that Chanel, one of the launch partners with iAd, decided to cancel its campaign. If true, the departure of Adidas would be the second high-profile customer lost.

iAds provide richly interactive ad experiences inside developers' apps, providing them a 60 percent cut of the advertising revenue. The hope is the advertisements -- noted by the iAd logo in the corner -- will be more compelling to users, because they don't have to leave their app and launch a browser to view them.

Competitors have been quick to highlight Apple's unconventional approach with iAds. In September, Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz said she thinks Apple's tight control will drive advertisers away and cause the fledgling service to "fall apart."
