Obama urges Democrats to support tax cut dealBy Catalina Camia and David Jackson, USA TODAYWASHINGTON — President Obama on Tuesday defended the deal he reached with Republicans on extending a broad range of expiring tax cuts, saying he did not want Americans to be harmed while he engages in a long-term political fight with the GOP. Obama held a hastily arranged news conference to answer questions on the agreement struck late Monday.

Vice President Biden went to Capitol Hill to sell the agreement to Democrats who played no part in reaching a compromise Obama said he struck because Republicans would not budge.

"The deal we struck here … gives us time to have a political battle," Obama said, adding that he was unwilling to see millions of Americans "immediately damaged at a time when the economy is about to recover."

Many in Obama's party, who wanted the focus on poor and middle-class families, lashed out at the agreement that would extend Bush-era tax cuts expiring this year for all income levels, including the wealthy.

"Republicans have held the middle class hostage for provisions that benefit only the wealthiest 3%, do not create jobs and add tens of billions of dollars to the deficit," House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said in a statement.

Pelosi said discussions with the president and the Democratic caucus will continue in the days ahead.

Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, an independent who caucuses with Democrats, vowed to filibuster the deal. His colleague, Sen. Mary Landrieu of Louisiana, said the plan was "unconscionable."

Seeking to mollify angry Democrats, Obama vowed to fight further extensions of tax cuts for the wealthy when they expire in two years under the proposal being considered by Congress.

"To my Democratic friends, what I'd suggest is let's make sure that we understand this is a long game. This is not a short game," Obama said.

Republicans wanted the cuts to be permanent. The plan would include a tax cut extension for families making more than $250,000 a year.

As part of the deal, Obama won agreement from Republicans to extend jobless benefits for 13 months.

Obama said he will pressure Republicans to pay for the cuts they want. He said the debate reminds him of the battle over the health care bill: He got a historic piece of legislation passed but was criticized for compromises in the plan.

"In order to get stuff done, we're going to have to compromise," Obama said. "This country was founded on compromise."

The deal provided the first big test of how Obama will work with Republicans after their victory in last month's election. Republicans will take control of the House of Representatives next month and narrow the Democratic majority in the Senate.

Obama said he had no choice because he did not have the votes in Congress. For Republicans, he said, "this is their holy grail, these tax cuts for the wealthy."

When asked how much the tax cuts will promote economic growth, Obama said they wouldn't provide "as significant a boost" for the economy as the stimulus bill but that wasn't needed because the economy is starting to come back.

Sen. Ben Nelson, D-Neb., said Biden characterized the agreement as "a bad situation but a good deal."

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., emerging from a weekly lunch meeting for Republicans, said he considers the deal final and thanked Obama for "working with Republicans on a bipartisan plan to prevent a tax hike on any American and in creating incentives for economic growth."

Apple has released iTunes 10.1 software update for Mac OS X and Windows platforms. This new version of iTunes brings support for iOS 4.2 update and the new wireless streaming feature - AirPlay. Announced at the Sept 1 event, the new AirPlay features allows streaming music, photos and videos to an Apple TV wirelessly. However, there's no update or mention about the highly anticipated iOS 4.2 update for iPhone, iPod touch and iPad devices.

New iTunes 10.1 for Mac OS X and Windows platforms brings number of important stability and performance fixes. New AirPlay feature will now let you stream videos from iTunes 10.1 to the all-new Apple TV wirelessly. Most importantly this update brings support for iOS 4.2 firmware running iPhone, iPod touch and iPad devices. Recently MacStories reported that iOS 4.2 update was delayed due to a Wi-Fi bug.

The iTunes 10.1 update for Mac OS X and Windows can be downloaded from here - http://www.apple.com/itunes/download just in case your Apple software update doesn't occur on its own.

Chilean miner thanks America for NY marathon support - Telegraph.co.uk

Mr Peña hobbled his way over the finish line in Central Park at 3.30pm, five hours and 40 minutes after beginning the race in Staten Island.

“I’m not from this country, but I saw posters saying ‘Go Edison!” and 'Go for it Peña!' from people I didn’t even know," he said at the finish line.

"The warmth from the American people is amazing.”

The 34 year-old, who was the 12th man to be raised to the surface in the Phoenix rescue capsule from deep below the Atacama Desert last month, had been dubbed "the runner" for his gruelling subterranean exercise regime.

The fitness fanatic and Elvis Presley enthusiast jogged in his heavy miners' boots for several miles each day of his ordeal through dark uneven tunnels finding his footing by the light of his miner's lamp.

He suffered from a knee injury while in the mine, which made his progress during the marathon extremely painful. Mr Peña, who sported a knee support for the run, was forced to walk the last section of the course, from Manhattan to the finish.

“I cried twice because of the pain in my knees,” he said. “But I didn’t travel this far to give up."

Carrying aloft the Chilean flag, Mr Peña was met at the finish line by his wife, Angélica.

He was invited to participate in the challenge through the streets of Manhattan by organisers, who were inspired by his drive and stamina.

"I could have come just to watch, but I decided to take part, to feel the emotion," he said ahead of Sunday's race.

"I have a strong desire to motivate the others. This is the most important thing for me."

On arrival in New York on Thursday he was a guest on The Late Show hosted by David Letterman, where with gyrating hips and quivering lip the miner won over the audience with his own rendition of Elvis's "Suspicious Minds".

He will visit Graceland, Presley's mansion in Memphis, Tennessee and will make a trip to Las Vegas to see "Viva Elvis," a Cirque du Soleil show, before flying home to Chile.

Report: Apple Holding Off On iPhone 4G Support - ChannelWeb

Verizon and AT&T plan to roll out 4G LTE (Long Term Evolution) networks next year, but Apple may not be part of the initial wave of handset makers building 4G devices.

On Monday, Techcrunch contributor Steve Cheney reported that Apple won't support 4G LTE in the iPhone until 2012, and in the meantime will offer a dual mode 3G iPhone that works on CDMA and GSM networks.

According to Cheney, Apple is well aware that the road to 4G LTE may be a bumpy one and plans to wait for the technology to mature before making the transition.

Apple, of course, didn't respond to a request for comment. But for a company that pays so much attention to user experience, it wouldn't be surprising that Apple would want to soft-pedal its 4G LTE support plans, especially at a time when 3G iPhone sales are still booming.

Michael Oh, founder of Tech Superpowers, a Boston-based Apple reseller, doesn't expect Apple to jump on the 4G bandwagon right away but says a dual mode GSM-CDMA iPhone makes a lot of sense.

Pentagon: Elements in Pakistani Intelligence Agency Support Terror - FOXNews

The Pentagon acknowledged Thursday that some parts of Pakistan's intelligence agency are cooperating with terrorist groups as a new report suggests Inter-Service Intelligence agents are working to undermine U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan.

Spokesman Col. Dave Lapan said the Pakistan intelligence service as an organization does not support terrorism, but some elements within the ISI are providing assistance to terrorists. 

U.S. officials have raised concerns about whether some members of the ISI "might be interacting with terrorist organizations in ways that aren't consistent with what the government and military are doing," Lapan said.

Lapan was responding after a report in The Wall Street Journal that suggested the ISI is pushing the Taliban to keep fighting in Afghanistan, undermining efforts by the Pentagon to end the war. 

The Journal quotes an Afghan commander in Kunar province who said the ISI is still urging and paying Taliban to fight NATO soldiers. 

Pakistan's top military leadership is working to correct the problem, Lapan said, but "like any large organization, change is difficult and comes slowly."

"The ISI has done a great deal in fighting terrorism. Some have said they probably have killed more terrorists than any other organization. But we also have some concerns with the strategic focus of the ISI," Lapan said.

Lapan spoke as U.S.-Pakistani relations remain strained over the effort to end the Taliban's use of Pakistan as a safe haven to launch attacks into Afghanistan. 

White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said Thursday that President Obama has not spoken to Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari but a Pakistani delegation is due in Washington later this month as part of a continuing strategic dialogue. 

Other strains have added to the burden on U.S.-Pakistani ties recently. On Wednesday, the U.S. apologized for a Sept. 30 attack that killed two Pakistani border guards. Expressing condolences, the U.S. said the helicopters mistook them for insurgents being pursued across the border from Afghanistan.

On Thursday, Pakistani officials said they are still weighing when to open the Torkham border crossing along Kyber Pass, which was closed as a result of the U.S. attack. Pakistan Foreign Ministry spokesman Abdul Basit said authorities were still evaluating the situation and would make a decision "in due course."

Torkham is a major supply route for NATO trucks shipping supplies to troops in Afghanistan Military officials insist closing the crossing hasn't hampered supply chains, but truck convoys are something of sitting ducks as hundreds of vehicles are backed up at the border. Pakistani militants torched 70 NATO trucks Wednesday in Pakistan -- the sixth set of attacks on NATO convoys in the past week.

The CIA continues to operate its own drone attacks on suspected terrorists, including one believed to have struck Thursday that targeted a vehicle in the North Waziristan tribal region where Taliban militants are based. The strike would be the sixth suspected missile attack this month, following what is believed to be 21 similar attacks in the region in September. 

As the troubled relationship evolves, one senior Pakistani official told The Wall Street Journal that Islamabad is fighting militants, not aiding them.

"Whenever anything goes wrong in Afghanistan, ISI is to be blamed," the official is quoted saying. "Honestly, they see ISI agents behind every bush in Afghanistan."

Lapan said the U.S. continues to communicate with Gen. Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, the head of the Pakistani Army and former chief of the ISI, and is "comfortable that change will be coming in how the ISI operates."

Speaking after a meeting with Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman John Kerry, D-Mass., said that "the ISI's continued involvement with various entities remains an issue of concern between us." 

He added that he is also concerned about Pakistani army attempts to undermine the government, but he doesn't think the army "will move in that type of way."
