Amazon has launched a $139 Wi-Fi-only Kindle, hoping to stay ahead of competitors by luring customers with low-priced e-readers that the online retail is betting will drive digital book sales. Amazon on Thursday also introduced the third generation of the original Kindle, which has Wi-Fi and 3G wireless technologies. The latter makes it possible to buy digital books from Amazon and download them in less than a minute. Amazon kept the price for the device at $189.
Both Kindles are about $10 less than comparable e-readers from rivals Barnes & Noble, Borders and about $30 less than Sony's device, excluding the $25 e-book gift card Sony gives with each purchase. Besides lower prices, the latest Kindles have several improvements over previous generations. While the size of the screen remains six inches diagonally, the display is based on manufacturer E Ink's latest technology, which offers a contrast ratio about 50% greater. While the screen only displays black-and-white, its high resolution makes it possible to read text even in direct sunlight, an advantage over the LCD displays used in Apple's iPad and smartphones.
In addition, Amazon has made the Kindle 21% smaller through a sleeker design and has reduced the weight by 15% to 8.7 ounces. The latest models have a battery life of a month and twice the storage, which is enough to carry up to 3,500 digital books.
While Amazon has prepped the latest Kindles as stiffer competitors, the retailer won't be able to start shipping the e-readers until Aug. 27. Amazon suspended shipments on Wednesday, but is taking pre-orders.
Nevertheless, Amazon is making the Kindle available in time for the back-to-school shopping season. The retailer is also pressuring competitors to lower prices, as the industry moves closer to offering devices possible as low as under $100, which analysts say would be low enough to be a compulsive buy for consumers.
Amazon's latest releases reflect an industry shift toward making money on the sales of e-books instead of the e-readers, since the lower prices are meant to get the devices in the hands of potential book buyers.
This strategy is apparently working for Amazon. the company this month announced that unit sales of e-books surpassed that of hardcover books. On Wednesday, Amazon said Swedish author Stieg Larsson has become the first writer to sell more than 1 million digital books on Amazon. Larsson is the author of the bestselling "Millennium Trilogy."
The growth rate of e-books sales for Amazon has been impressive, given that digital books overtook hardcover books in less than three years. Amazon has been selling hardcover books for 15 years.
However, competition could get tougher, not just from other e-readers, but also from the emerging category of tablet-style computers, such as the iPad. While the Apple computer starts at more than $300 more than the cheapest Kindle, it does considerably more besides acting as an e-reader. The device also surfs the Web, accesses e-mail and plays video, music and games.

Blast Damages Japanese Tanker Near Iran, Oman
Japanese officials are trying to determine what caused an explosion on an oil tanker as it passed through the Strait of Hormuz.
Japan's transport ministry said Wednesday that the M. Star was carrying about two million barrels of crude oil from the United Arab Emirates to the Japanese port of Chiba when it was rocked by an explosion.
The United States Navy's Fifth Fleet, based in the Gulf state of Bahrain, said Wednesday the cause of the blast was unknown.
But the ship's owner claimed the explosion was likely the result of an attack. Crew members on the tanker said one person on board saw a flash of light on the horizon just before the explosion.
Japan's Mitsui O.S.K. Lines said the explosion blasted a lifeboat off the ship and damaged some of the starboard hatches. It said one crew member suffered minor injuries, and that the tanker is on its way to the port of Fujairah in the United Arab Emirates to check for damage.
Despite the blast, the company said the ship's tanks did not rupture and that no oil is leaking.
Japan's transport ministry has said the cause of the explosion is not clear. It said the area is not known for commercial piracy.
Meanwhile, port officials in the UAE blamed the damage on a large wave that slammed into the tanker after an earthquake hit the region. Iranian officials say an earthquake hit the region early Wednesday and that other ships reported high waves as a result.
The United States Geological Survey, which monitors earthquake activity around the world, said on its website that the last quake was a magnitude 4.8 quake on Saturday.
Officials said the Strait of Hormuz remains open for shipping.
About 40 percent of all oil shipped by tankers passes through the Strait of Hormuz. The waterway, near Iran and Oman, connects the Persian Gulf to the Arabian Sea.

Taliban May Have Captured Two U.S. Service Members Missing in Afghanistan
A ground and air search is under way in Afghanistan for two U.S. service members missing since yesterday who may have been captured by the Taliban.
The two left a compound in Kabul City in a vehicle yesterday, according to a statement on NATO’s website that didn’t identify their nationality.
A senior North Atlantic Treaty Organization military officer, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said both were Americans. The Associated Press reported they were U.S. Navy personnel, citing unnamed officials.
The two were captured by the Taliban, Akhtar Mohammed, a senior Taliban commander, said in a telephone interview.
Separately, five U.S. soldiers were killed today in southern Afghanistan by improvised explosive devices, NATO said.
More than 1,000 U.S. soldiers have died in the war in Afghanistan, the Department of Defense said July 23. President Barak Obama has vowed to start bringing U.S. troops home next year.

Droids Gets Business Cred with Android 2.2
Which member of Verizon's Droid family of smartphones will get Android 2.2 first? The just-released Motorola Droid X is slated to receive the new version of Google's mobile operating system in late July, which could mean any day now. Other reports have the Droid 2, the original droid's replacement that's coming next month, as the first phone come with Android 2.2 preinstalled.
Whichever Droid earns the honor, it won't be the first phone to run Android 2.2. Google began sending over-the-air version 2.2 updates to users of its Nexus One phones about a month ago, even though the company will soon stop selling its HTC-build handset.
With the arrival of Android 2.2, the latest batch of Droids and other high-end smartphones, including the HTC EVO 4G and Samsung's Galaxy-S series, will be much better equipped to battle Research In Motion's Blackberry and Apple's iPhone in the enterprise market. Google's next-gen mobile OS adds a number of business-friendly features that will ensure Android's growth beyond its consumer base.
Security is vastly improved. Microsoft Exchange administrators, for instance, can remotely wipe stolen or lost Android 2.2 phones, and restore the devices to their factory defaults. They can also enforce a password policy, and use numeric pin or alpha-numeric passwords to unlock the handsets.
If you're running Exchange 2007 or newer, you can quickly set up and sync an Exchange account with just your user name and password. Android 2.2's Calendar app supports Exchange calendars, and email users can auto-complete recipient names from their corporate directory.
Cloud Compatible
Android 2.2 has better cloud integration too. Developers can activate phone alerts, route information to handsets, and enable two-way sync features for their apps. Users can back up their data to the cloud, and then restore it on a new device--a boon given the insanely fast upgrade cycles for smartphones.
Since Android 2.2 allows you to use your phone as a portable hotspot, it may actually help businesses cut travel costs. Rather than paying an outrageous fee to use a hotel's Wi-Fi service, you could connect your computer to your phone's portable hotspot for Internet access.
Of course, other consumer-friendly upgrades, including faster performance and support for Flash Player 10.0 (e.g., for Web-based training videos) will benefit business users too.
In a follow-up post on this blog soon, we'll take a closer look at the Android, BlackBerry, and iPhone platforms and decide which is best for business.

Forty-ton whale lands on yacht during Cape Town sailing trip
A couple who took a yacht for a quiet sailing trip were stunned when a 40-ton whale crash-landed on their boat off Cape Town.
The couple was enjoying calm seas off the South African coast when the animal flipped into the air and smashed into their mast.
Ralph Mothes, 59, and Paloma Werner, 50, were helpless as the beast thrashed around on their 33ft vessel before slipping back into the water.
.
Werner said: "It really was quite incredible but very scary. The whale was about the same size as the boat.
"We'd spotted it about 100 metres away and thought that was the end of it. Then suddenly it was right up beside us."I assumed it would go underneath the boat but instead it sprang out of the sea. We were very lucky to get through it, as the sheer weight of the thing was huge."There were bits of skin and blubber left behind, and the mast was wrecked. It brought down the rigging too.
"Thank goodness the hull was made of steel and not fibreglass or we could have been ruined."
Moments before the animal leapt it had pounded its tail on the surface of the water in a 'lob-tailing' ritual to communicate with other whales. The shaken couple, who are experienced seafarers with the Cape Town Sailing Academy, used their engine to get back to shore in Table Bay.
Whales are a common sight in the Atlantic Ocean off the Western Cape coast at this time of year as they come near the shore to breed.
Thousands of tourists flock to the region's seaside resorts every year to spot the mammals during the South African winter from June to November.
Hermanus, a popular destination around 80 miles east of Cape Town, employs a 'whale crier' to walk through the town announcing where whales have been seen.

Motorola Droid X Sold Out? Not Necessarily
Verizon's Motorola Droid X is a hot commodity these days. Despite what you may have read, though, the phone isn't too hot to get your hands on -- if you know where to look.
Within a day of the Droid X launch last Thursday, Verizon's online store had to push its shipping date back to July 23 in order to keep up with demand. Now, Verizon appears to be extending that delay: Big Red has just bumped its Droid X shipping date to August 3 for all orders placed online. Verizon Wireless locations around the country are reporting the same availability date for in-store purchases. Best Buy, meanwhile, is currently sold out of the device altogether. So what to do if you want to get the Droid X without waiting? As of the time of this story's publication, Amazon.com lists the Droid X as in stock and available. The phone is priced at $179.99 -- about 20 bucks less than you'd pay at either Verizon or Best Buy. The standard two-year contract is required to get that discounted price; if you don't want a contract, you can opt to buy the phone unsubsidized for $569.99.
Amazon is offering free standard shipping with any Droid X purchases.
Of course, if you'd rather get your phone directly from Verizon, the delay isn't terribly long. But if you're chomping at the bit and don't want to wait, you have some options -- and they'll even end up saving you some cash in the end, too.

Amazon.com Says Kindle Sales Accelerated, E-Books Pass Print
Amazon.com Inc., the largest Internet retailer, said growth in sales of its Kindle digital reader accelerated every month in the second quarter and that it’s selling more electronic books than hardcover versions.
The rate of Kindle sales also has tripled since the company cut the price to $189 from $259, Amazon.com Chief Executive Officer Jeff Bezos said in a statement.
“We’ve reached a tipping point with the new price of Kindle,” Bezos said. “Amazon.com customers now purchase more Kindle books than hardcover books--astonishing when you consider that we’ve been selling hardcover books for 15 years, and Kindle books for 33 months.”
The 27 percent price cut, announced last month, was aimed at helping Amazon stave off a threat from Apple Inc.’s tablet- style iPad, which includes e-book reading features. Amazon.com hasn’t disclosed Kindle sales since releasing the device in 2007, saying only that it has sold millions.
Amazon.com sold more than triple the number of Kindle books in the first half of the year as it did in the same period last year, Seattle-based Amazon.com said. More than 81 percent of its 630,000 electronic books are $9.99 or less.
Despite their lack of real jobs 'Jersey Shore' cast members go on strike.
Several "Jersey Shore" cast members have reportedly gone on strike, refusing to shoot scenes for the Snooki Show's third season. Why? According to E! Online and other media outlets, they don't get paid enough.
Here's how it breaks down. The alleged strikers -- JWoww, Ronni, Sammy, Pauly D and Vinny -- each pull in $10,000 per episode, say's USA Today. So at the end of a nine-episode season, each of them walks away with $90,000. That's $90K for partying, drinking heavily, hooking up, wearing tacky clothes and sporting glaringly hideous spray-on tans. There are plenty of people in New Jersey who do all of these things and receive no compensation whatsoever. If you ask me, those are the individuals who should be threatening a revolt of some sort.
I mean, we're living in challenging economic times. Plenty of very talented, capable people lack jobs and haven't been able to find new ones for many, many months. If your name is JWoww and you actually are employed, this is not only a sign of remarkable good fortune, it's a borderline miracle.
" The Jersey Shore" has become a cultural phenomenon of sorts. And I understand that the "actors" want to be compensated fairly for that. But you are not the cast of "Friends." So suck it up. Cash your paychecks bef and count your blessings for things you do have.

2010 British Open: Louis Oosthuizen is making golf fans learn his name by taking charge at St. Andrews
Practically everybody on earth expects you to fold. All of the roars are for someone else, not you. You know what they're thinking: "Who is this guy, and how do you pronounce his name? What is he doing here, and why doesn't he get out of the way?"
So what do you do? You hold up.
Lodewicus Theodorus Oosthuizen is something of an inconvenience in the British Open. No one can quite deliver the correct inflection in his name, or explain how the gap-toothed South African has managed to outscore all of the European Ryder Cup team, as well as Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson. All around him are more popular players -- the entire United Kingdom no doubt wishes he would move aside and let Englishmen Paul Casey and Lee Westwood have the glory. Everyone keeps talking about who the real leader is going into Sunday's final round at St. Andrews.

Sticking to the top of the Google trends, it pushed other weekend movie newbies like The Sorcerer's Apprentice right out of the trends. Nolan, director of the smash hit Dark Knight, is already getting big kudos for Inception. According to most reviews, the movie lives up to the previews.
